Re: Oppose H.R.7008
The League of Women Voters of the United States urges you to oppose H.R. 7008, which would require voters to present a photo ID to cast a ballot.
The League opposes strict voter ID laws that limit the IDs that voters can use to register to vote or to cast a ballot. These rules are completely unnecessary as it is already illegal to cast a fraudulent ballot by impersonating a voter. The right to vote is protected by the Constitution, and election officials have decades of experience verifying voters’ identities at the polls using a variety of documents.
The midterm election is less than 60 days away, and if passed, this bill would create major hurdles for election officials who are already preparing for the election. Voting rules should not be changed with less than 60 days until Election Day.
There are many communities of eligible voters who would be unnecessarily burdened by the requirements of this bill. Many voters do not have access to the strict list of documents accepted under this bill and will thereby be denied their constitutionally protected right to vote. For example, older Americans who no longer drive and may have expired driver’s licenses, which would not be sufficient. Requiring a strict list of IDs to vote in federal elections is a blatant attempt to silence and divide us. It simply creates another barrier to voting.
At this time, voters need fewer barriers to getting to the polls and more information and education about how to get there, what is on their ballots, and what they need to take with them to vote. The League demands that you vote “No” if this bill comes to the floor.
