This week, Congress is moving forward with its budget package, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which would strip health care and food access from millions of Americans with limited incomes to offset tax cuts for the wealthy. This bill slashes funding for Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which are proven to reduce poverty, threatening the independence of everyday Americans.
Medicaid is the single largest source of health coverage in the country. Nearly 72 million people, including children, pregnant people, parents, older adults with limited incomes, and people with disabilities, rely on Medicaid for essential care, including doctor visits, hospitalizations, long-term care, maternity care, mental health care, and rural clinic services. SNAP is the country's largest nutrition assistance program, supporting nearly 42 million people with low incomes to afford food.
The Senate is currently finalizing its bill before voting on it, and then will send it to the House for a final vote before it goes to the President for a signature. With just days left in the process, we must protect our nation’s most vital programs for the millions who need them.
