UPDATE: Celebrate #GivingTuesday by making a tax-deductible donation to the League now.
Last month, we introduced you to #GivingTuesday, a national day of giving that takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, December 3. In honor of #GivingTuesday, we’re taking some time to reflect on our work over the past year. Last week, we shared a snapshot of some of the work we’ve done to defend the environment.
Now, we’re taking a look at our work to reform the nation’s campaign finance system and the work we’ve been up to protect our elections system and keep big money out of politics:
- We submitted an amicus brief in the major Supreme Court Case, McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission (FEC). The case, deemed “the next Citizens United,” challenges aggregate contribution limits to political candidates and political committees from individual donors. The stakes are high: in today’s world more money means more influence and if McCutcheon wins the case, donors will be able to donate more than $3 million to federal candidates, political committees and parties.
- We lobbied Congress to take legislative action to fix and protect our nation’s campaign finance system. We urged Senators to close gaping loopholes in campaign finance laws and oppose repealing vital campaign contribution limits that protect our elections system. We also asked the U.S. House to preserve critical anti-corruption campaign finance legislation.
- We took bold action to encourage President Obama to fix the nation's corrupt campaign finance system. Along with fellow campaign finance reform groups, we informed the President of the urgent need for his leadership in the battle to protect the American people from the corruption of our democracy.
The League believes that it is essential to stop the flood secret money and to let the sunshine in. We support enacting effective disclosure legislation to end the millions of dollars in secret money that influence our federal elections and corrupt our political system. The League is active at all levels of government to protect our political system from big-money corruption and to ensure that the voices of voters across the country can be heard.
#GivingTuesday is propelled by those who believe that passion and commitment can make a difference. On December 3rd, we ask that you think of the League’s work as you reflect on the need to protect our democracy and preserve the integrity of our elections.
