The public is invited to join the League of Women Voters of Catawba Valley in celebrating the organization’s 94th anniversary from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library, 375 Third St., NE, Hickory.
The organization was founded in 1920 with the intention of encouraging women to take a larger role in public affairs. Described as "a mighty political experiment," the League of Women Voters predated women's suffrage by about six months as the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote was not passed until August 1920. Carrie Chapman Catt, one of the organization’s founders, had long been involved in the women's suffrage movement.
