WASHINGTON, DC — As polls close on the East Coast of the United States and the world awaits the results of the consequential 2026 midterm elections, Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters, issued the following statement:
"This election is about much more than the candidates on the ballot. It is about whether the future of our democracy remains in the hands of the American people, or politicians in power. This entire election season, and even on Election Day, the Trump administration has escalated efforts to undermine confidence in our elections, create confusion, and threaten voting rights. Despite the political whiplash imposed by this administration on the American people, voters have been making their choices known and have been showing up for democracy.
“Approximately 60 million Americans cast their ballots before Election Day, compared with fewer than 46 million in the 2022 midterms. Early voting among Black and Latino voters also surged, increasing 35.8% and 46.3, respectively, compared with 2022. The determination of voters to make their voices heard sends a clear message: our democracy belongs to the people, not those who seek to silence us. Throughout the day, voters have been supported by dedicated poll workers and election administrators across the nation who courageously continued to fulfill their civic duty, despite threats of violence and continuous reports of polling place disruptions, equipment failures, and federal interference.
"As voting continues in several parts of the country, it is vital for voters to remember their rights. If you are on line when polls close, stay on line. You have the right to vote. If you encounter problems, call the nonpartisan Election Protection hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) for support. If your usual polling location is closed, visit VOTE411.org for up-to-date and trusted voting information. Your ballot is your voice, and your vote must be respected.
"The League will remain vigilant as the election process continues, through counting, to certification, to the peaceful transfer of power. Our democracy is on the line, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with Americans in defending and protecting free and fair elections."
