Shannon Augustus serves as Press Secretary of the League of Women Voters of the United States, where she is responsible for the League’s press outreach and media requests.

Prior to joining the League, Shannon served as a strategic marketing manager for a state government affairs firm. There, she led the firm's strategic marketing, communications, and brand messaging.

Shannon’s professional career started in the television industry, where she worked at C-SPAN for several years as a producer. Her stints included coverage of the White House and multiple presidential elections. She also held roles on C-SPAN’s marketing and communications team for the C-SPAN Bus program. In that role, Shannon served as spokesman and was tasked with the network's corporate and community relations activities.  

Shannon is a native of the Washington, DC area and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Maryland.

Lawsuit Filed to Stop Vigilante Surveillance of Drop Boxes in Arizona (Press Release)

Today, Protect Democracy filed a lawsuit on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Arizona in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona in response to organizations and individuals who have conspired to intimidate voters in the 2022 election through “Operation Drop Box.”

League of Women Voters and Voting Rights Advocates Notify Georgia of State and Federal Voting Violations (Press Release)

Lawrenceville, GA – Today the League of Women Voters of Georgia along with other voting rights advocates, notified the Georgia Secretary of State and Gwinnett County that the county has been in violation of state and federal law by illegally sustaining pre-election challenges to the eligibility of registered voters. The League, the Georgia State Conference of the NAACP, Gwinnett County Branch of the NAACP, GALEO Latino Community Development Fund, Inc., Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda, Inc., and Common Cause sent the notice letter as a prerequisite to filing a lawsuit under the NVRA.

Today, Montgomery County Judge Bonifant ruled in favor of a petition put forward by the Maryland State Board of Elections to enable pre-processing of mail-in ballots for the November general elections. Common Cause Maryland, the ACLU of Maryland, League of Women Voters of Maryland, Maryland PIRG, on behalf of the Everyone Votes Maryland coalition offered congratulations to the State Board of Elections on their successful legal bid to ensure timely election results in the aftermath of the November general elections.

Jefferson City, Mo. -- Two nonpartisan civic engagement organizations sued the state of Missouri and Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft in Cole County Circuit Court to block provisions of one of the nation’s most extreme laws restricting voter registration activity and distribution of absentee ballot applications. The law violates the right to core political speech by severely curtailing the ability to engage with voters.
