Shannon Augustus

Shannon Augustus serves as Press Secretary of the League of Women Voters of the United States, where she is responsible for the League’s press outreach and media requests.

Prior to joining the League, Shannon served as a strategic marketing manager for a state government affairs firm. There, she led the firm's strategic marketing, communications, and brand messaging.

Shannon’s professional career started in the television industry, where she worked at C-SPAN for several years as a producer. Her stints included coverage of the White House and multiple presidential elections. She also held roles on C-SPAN’s marketing and communications team for the C-SPAN Bus program. In that role, Shannon served as spokesman and was tasked with the network's corporate and community relations activities.  

Shannon is a native of the Washington, DC area and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Maryland.

LWV Reaches over 100,000 Voters for National Voter Registration Day (Press Release)

WASHINGTON – The League of Women Voters is set to reach over 100,000 voters this year for the civic holiday of National Voter Registration Day. National Voter Registration Day is recognized every year during the third week of September, as a nonpartisan civic holiday where organizations come together to register hundreds of thousands of voters on a single day.  Since the inception of NVRD in 2012, the League has been the largest on-the-ground partner.

HARRISBURG, PA — Yesterday, the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania (LWVPA) filed an amicus brief in Public Interest Legal Foundation v. Schmidt, a case before the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, urging the court to reject an attempt to disclose personal information of voters to a third-party, private group. The League is represented by Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP.

MAJOR VICTORY IN LAWSUIT AGAINST TEXAS ANTI-VOTER LAW (Press Release)

AUSTIN, TEXAS - A federal court ruled late last week in favor of civil rights groups who filed a lawsuit against anti-voter legislation, Senate Bill 1. The lawsuit, filed in 2021 by the Texas Civil Rights Project, American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Texas, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Disability Rights Texas, and the law firm Jenner & Block LLP, argued that the law’s mail-in ballot identification matching provisions violate federal law.

League of Women Voters of South Carolina Files Brief in Supreme Court Racial Gerrymandering Case (Press Release)

Washington, DC — Today, the League of Women Voters of South Carolina (LWVSC) filed an amicus–or friend of the court–brief along with the Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce, the Charleston Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and the Circular Congregational Church in the case Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, which will be heard by the US Supreme Court on October 11, 2023. The case is on appeal after a three-judge district court struck down South Carolina’s congressional map as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.

South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, a racial gerrymandering case to be heard before the Supreme Court of the United States this fall. The brief is also joined by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the Leadership Conference Education Fund, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Campaign Legal Center, Demos, and the Southern Coalition for Social Justice. 

Good Government Groups Defend Washington State Disclosure Law, Facing Opposition from Meta (Press Release)

Seattle, WA – Campaign Legal Center, joined by the League of Women Voters of Washington, Fix Democracy First and the Brennan Center for Justice, today filed an amicus brief in State of Washington v. Meta Platforms, Inc. supporting a Washington state law that advances voters’ right to know who is spending in their elections.
