Senate Approves Keystone XL Pipeline

Press Release / Last Updated:

“The President must veto. Keystone is not in our national interest,” says League

Washington, DC - “Today’s vote in the U.S. Senate to approve construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline is profoundly disappointing. It is a harmful, short-sighted decision that endangers the health and safety of Americans,” said Elisabeth MacNamara, President of the League of Women Voters of the U.S.

“Our nation’s reliance on fossil fuels should not be more important than the health and well-being of Americans and our environment,” said MacNamara.

“We urge President Obama to continue his commitment to people not polluters,” added MacNamara. “The President must veto this misguided legislation.”

“The Keystone XL Pipeline is not in our national interest,” MacNamara said. “It is bad energy policy: It threatens the safety of our drinking water and increases the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere that contribute to climate change.”

“Today, the U.S. Senate put polluters’ interests ahead of those of ordinary Americans and acted irresponsibly in this time of climate change. We call on President Obama to follow through and veto this harmful legislation in order to protect the health and safety of all Americans. A veto by the President is the only thing that will protect us now,” concluded MacNamara.
