Voting Rights Groups Respond to President Biden’s Comments on Ending the Filibuster

Press Release / Last Updated:

Washington, DC — In response to President Joe Biden’s comments during last night’s CNN town hall that he would be open to altering the filibuster to pass voting rights legislation, the League of Women Voters, People For the American Way, and Declaration for American Democracy released the following statement:

“President Joe Biden took a step in the right direction for voting rights by indicating his willingness to eliminate the Senate filibuster as an obstacle to passing federal voting rights legislation. While words are great, President Biden must now do everything in his power to get the Freedom to Vote Act over the finish line and restore the full protections of the Voting Rights Act. Critical voting rights legislation before the Senate right now is  a once-in-a-generation opportunity to expand access to voting for millions of Americans.

“Right now, redistricting is underway, anti-voter bills are going into effect, and midterms are around the corner. Now is the time to protect the freedom to vote before it’s too late.”

The League of Women Voters (LWV), People for the American Way (People For), and Declaration for American Democracy (the DFAD coalition) have been leading actions at the White House since August 24, calling on President Biden to fix or nix the filibuster.
