#GivingTuesday Snapshot: The League’s Work to Prevent Climate Change
UPDATE: Celebrate #GivingTuesday by making a tax-deductible donation to the League now.
Last week, we told you about #GivingTuesday, a national day of giving that kicks off the holiday season. Taking place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday celebrates and encourages charitable activities to support nonprofit organizations like the League.
In honor of #GivingTuesday, we’re taking some time to reflect on our work over the past year. This week, we’re sharing a snapshot of some of the work we’ve done to defend the environment in the past year. The League of Women Voters has been at the forefront of the environmental protection movement for decades, consistently supporting legislation to preserve our nation’s natural resources, prevent climate change and protect our public health.
Here’s just a few snapshots of the environmental protection work we’ve been up to over the past year!
- After months of advocacy efforts, we were successful in driving President Obama to take the lead to protect our climate and work to reduce carbon pollution, a move that will protect our children, our nation and the world at large. With your help, we also sent over 5,000 letters urging the U.S. Senate to put people before polluters by rejecting bad legislation that would threaten our environment.
- We’ve helped lead the fight against the Keystone XL Pipeline, which comes with a laundry list of health and environmental risks. With your help, we sent thousands of letters to the President and the U.S. State Department voicing our concerns about the pipeline’s detrimental effects on the public’s health. The League of Women Voters of Nebraska led the way in this fight by testifying at the U.S. State Department’s hearing on the pipeline in April.
- In February, we joined with environmental groups, women’s groups and social justice groups to serve as a partner for “Forward on Climate,” the largest rally on climate change in the history of the country! League members from across the country traveled to DC to help us build national support to put our country -- and our planet -- on the path to a sustainable future.
The League believes that preventing climate change requires action from both individuals and policymakers. The League and League members across the country will continue to do everything in their power to prevent climate change and protect our public health, but the fight requires the help of all community members.
#GivingTuesday is propelled by those who believe that passion and commitment can make a difference. On December 3rd, we ask that you think of the League as you reflect on the need to protect our climate, our health and our Earth.
