The League of Women Voters of the United States congratulated Speaker McCarthy on his historic election to the Speaker of the House. LWVUS hopes to work with Speaker McCarthy’s office to prioritize the issues that impact our democracy and the American people the most. 

LWVUS Joins Letter Urging the Administration not to Issue a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on an Asylum Ban (Legal Document)

The League of Women Voters of the United States joined nearly 300 civil, human rights, and immigrant rights organizations on a letter to President Biden urging the Administration not to issue a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on an asylum ban. The asylum ban would make individuals ineligible for asylum if they enter the US without using an established pathway or without applying for protection in countries of transit. 

LWVUS Joins Letter Urging Congress to Strengthen the Office of Congressional Ethics (Legal Document)

The League of Women Voters joined more than 25 other groups in urging the House of Representatives to codify the Office of Congressional Ethics into law, as well as to give it subpoena authority.

LWVUS Joins Letter to Senate Leadership in Support of Electoral Count Act Reform (Legal Document)

The League joined a letter written by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights with 60 other organizations to urge the Senate to reform the outdated Electoral Count Act of 1887 before the end of the year. The Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act, S.4573, represents a significant advance forward to securing and protecting our democracy from future attacks on presidential elections.  

LWVUS Submits Comments to HHS on Healthy People 2030 Objectives (Legal Document)

LWVUS submitted public comments to the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on the proposed Healthy People 2030 objectives. The League articulated why the objective to increase the proportion of the voting-age citizens who vote as a social determinant of health should be updated from a research objective to a core objective.

LWVUS Urges Congress to Protect Dreamers (Legal Document)

Senate and House leadership announced that protecting Dreamers is a high priority in the remaining time of the 117th Congress, leading the League to urge Congress to follow through and pass a bill. People who are protected by DACA, their families, and their communities deserve the peace of mind to build their lives and futures in the United States. 

LWVUS Comments on 2030 Census Development (Legal Document)

The League submitted comments to the Census Bureau in response to a request for public comment on how the Bureau can improve the 2030 Census. Comments focused on ending prison gerrymandering, ensuring accurate counting, creating more accessible digital census options, and collecting data that is inclusive of all communities- including revising the standards for federal data on race and ethnicity. 

LWVUS Urges the US Department of Health and Human Services to Allow DACA Recipients to Enroll in Health Insurance Programs (Legal Document)

The League signed onto a letter to Secretary Becerra of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), urging HHS to allow recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to enroll in health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Medicaid. 

LWVUS Urged COP27 Heads of Delegations to Raise Climate Concerns (Legal Document)

The coalition, led by Climate Action Network, urged COP27 Heads of Delegation to show political leadership in this climate emergency. Further, the coalition urged governments to cooperate and act in solidarity for the people suffering from climate and interconnected crises to ensure that COP27 urgently raises ambition and provides scaled-up finance for implementation in line with equity and fair shares to ensure a climate-safe world for all. 

LWVUS Asks the White House Gender Policy Council to Urge the President to Send Guidance to the US Archivist to Publish the Equal Rights Amendment (Legal Document)

The League of Women Voters of the United States sent a letter to Senior Advisor Vogelstein and Co-Chair Klein of the White House Gender Policy Council, encouraging them to urge President Biden to send guidance to the US Archivist to publish the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).
