In last night’s State of the Union (SOTU) address, President Obama addressed many crucial issues affecting our country. His remarks touched on some of the League’s priority issues including voting rights, climate change, immigration and gun violence.

On Wednesday, February 27th, the Supreme Court will review Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder, a case that questions the constitutionality of Section 5 the Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965.

 League Joins Amicus Briefs in Shelby County v. Holder case on Voting Rights Act (VRA)

LWVUS and the League of Women Voters of South Carolina (LWVSC) signed onto briefs in the case of Shelby County v. Holder. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case on February 27, 2013.

The brief in Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council argues that the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) blocks a documentary proof-of-citizenship requirement to register to vote imposed by the state of Arizona.
