Fighting Voter Suppression

LWV of Wisconsin filed a federal lawsuit to reactivate the voter registrations of 31,854 voters who had been unlawfully purged from the voter registration rolls.

On June 23, the Supreme Court of the United States handed down its decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, overturning a New York gun safety law. The Court ruled that New York’s law requiring a license to carry concealed weapons in public places is unconstitutional.

Absentee ballot drop boxes, which were used in hundreds of communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, are now illegal in the state except in clerk’s offices, a divided Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled just one month before the Aug. 9 primary.

The League of Women Voters of South Dakota and the League of Women Voters of the United States filed a federal lawsuit challenging Senate Bill 180.

WASHINGTON — Today, the US Supreme Court ruled 6 – 3 in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen that New York’s 100-year-old law restricting certain individuals from carrying concealed weapons in public places is unconstitutional, effectively weakening gun safety laws around the country.  

NYSRPA challenged a New York state law requiring New Yorkers to show a justifiable reason for having a concealed-carry permit to carry guns in public places. The League raised the implications of this case on polling places.
