OBAMA ADMINISTRATION’S GREENHOUSE GAS RULE IS A MAJOR STEP IN CONTROLLING CLIMATE CHANGE

Washington, DC (April 13, 2012) – The League of Women Voters today praised the Administration’s proposed greenhouse gas rule for new power plants.  The new rule, published this morning, will set new public health protections to limit industrial carbon pollution for future power plants, a key step in controlling global climate change. 

“The EPA’s proposed carbon pollution standard for new power plants is critical to help eliminate the ill-effects of global climate change and protect public health,” said Elisabeth MacNamara, national President of the League of Women Voters. 

“We are very pleased that this first-of-its-kind rule, proposed by EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, is now open for comment by everyone. We are going to reach out in communities around the country to be sure Americans know about this important step in taking on global climate change and urging them to add their voices in support of this rule,” MacNamara said. 

“Today, we are glad the Obama Administration, led by EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, got tough with polluters and stood firm behind the public's health," said MacNamara.

“Public opinion is clear - voters want the EPA to hold corporate polluters responsible for dirty air and threats to public health.  The science is clear - new clean air standards are essential to protect people’s health.  The League of Women Voters is pleased that the Administration has chosen the health of children and families instead of giving in to the lobbying of big polluters, coal companies and power plants,” concluded MacNamara.
