Senate Fails to Pass Women’s Health and Protection Act

Press Release / Last Updated:

WASHINGTON — Today the League of Women Voters of the United States President Dr. Deborah Ann Turner and CEO Virginia Kase Solomón issued the following statement after the (49-51) Senate vote on the Women’s Health and Protection Act:

"When we elect our nation’s leaders, we do so with the expectation that they will look out for our best interests and ensure democracy for all. Instead, today a majority of US senators refused to stand up for women’s health and reproductive freedom in this country. This freedom to make reproductive choices, which includes the access to an abortion, is supported by 61% of Americans.

"We are disappointed. We are angry. But we will not give up. We will continue to fight alongside our allies to ensure that the rights of women and those who can become pregnant are protected.

"It is critical that our elected leaders in Congress balance the judicial branch and protect women’s health at all costs. We call on the Senate to stop playing politics with the lives of women. We remain steadfast in our call to amend or eliminate the filibuster to ensure the Senate’s ability to protect reproductive freedom and healthcare in this country."
