Election Observers

League of Women Voters president Chris Carson issued the following statement in response to a Department of Homeland Security bill provision that would allow President Trump to dispatch Secret Service agents to polling places:

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin has been running an election observer program since 2010. Read their guest blog post on their observations from Election Day 2014.

I spent Election Day evaluating polling places for LWV of Prince George's County, MD. I want to acknowledge and thank the poll workers and judges without whom Election Day would not function.

Since 2011, Wisconsin has been one of the battlegrounds for those fighting to protect voting rights. I had the privilege of visiting Wisconsin this past weekend to do my part to help protect and educate Wisconsin voters.

This guest blog post by Andrea Kaminski, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin discusses recent changes to election laws and their continuing fight against voter ID in their state.

"Tina Merlitti, who heads up the League of Women Voters of the Akron Area and is a former Akron councilwoman, was an observer on behalf of the state Issue 2 campaign at Callis Tower in Akron, a single-precinct polling location... Merlitti said the biggest problem she saw at the polling place was voters who had moved and weren’t sure where they needed to vote. ... 'Often the people were supposed to vote there,' she said. 'We would look it up for them and then take them back to the judge — the one checking voters in — and say, ‘They’re supposed to vote here.’ They would then give them a provisional ballot. After it happened a couple of times, they would send them to us to have us look it up for them.'”

As I went about my day on Election Day volunteering to be a polling place evaluator for my local League (a program instituted by the Board of Elections done in

"Voters are not required to show photo ID’s. But Andrea Kaminski of the League of Women Voters tweeted that poll workers in Onalaska were said to be asking for ID’s and the, 'issue has been resolved.'"

" League of Women Voters Cass County, who volunteered to be media watchers for the Pharos-Tribune for the election, have been observing vote centers since polls opened last Thursday.  The league monitored vote centers Thursday, Friday and Saturday, by filling out a questionnaire and will continue through Tuesday evening."
