NEWARK — In a resounding victory for democracy in New Jersey today, the Court in Kim v. Hanlon, a case challenging New Jersey’s use of the unconstitutional and discriminatory county line on its primary ballots, granted plaintiffs’ motion for a preliminary injunction – barring use of the county line on New Jersey’s ballots in the June primary election.

WASHINGTON — The League of Women Voters of the United States joined an amicus brief filed in the consolidated Idaho v. United States and Moyle v. United States cases before the US Supreme Court. The cases concern whether states can block pregnant people from getting emergency abortion care in hospitals, which if adopted, would have devastating implications for pregnant people facing medical emergencies. The amicus brief is led by the National Women’s Law Center and the League is represented by Cohen Milstein. 

Whether they’re in the military, studying abroad, or permanently living overseas, all US citizens living abroad who are eligible to vote can still cast their ballots. The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voter Act grants military members and US citizens living abroad the right to vote absentee in federal elections in their former state of residence.

“Gun locks can save lives,” said Andy Crossfield, co-chair of the League of Women Voters of Polk County’s gun violence prevention committee.

To Crossfield, it is a rare moment of consensus in a politically-fraught time.

“There’s so many times in politics where you just can’t make a difference but this was an ability to actually reach people and supply a need that they didn’t even know they had,” he said.

In the past 10 months, he said, the League of Women Voters of Polk County has distributed more than 1,800 gun locks in the county.

The League of Women Voters of Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties hope about 50 people who walked for equality in Olean will take the message they heard to the polls this November.
