Fighting Voter Suppression

The state of Rhode Island has agreed to eliminate witness/notary requirements for vote by mail throughout the 2020 elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The increasing number of attacks on our democracy requires our organization to speak out against unconstitutional acts.

The League has joined a letter addressing the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, urging the Senate to make additional investments in state and local elections. 

The League sent a letter urging U.S. Senators to include $3.6 billion in funding for elections in the next stimulus package.

LWV of Pennsylvania and partners filed a motion to intervene in Trump v. Boockvar, a case seeking to limit vote-by-mail options in Pennsylvania. The League and its partners seek to intervene on behalf of impacted voters.

LWV of Connecticut filed a federal lawsuit seeking to make mail-in voting available to every eligible Connecticut voter during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The LWV of Wisconsin filed an amended complaint ahead of the November election seeking back-up options for mail-in absentee voters who do not receive their ballot in the mail, as well as suspension of the witness signature requirement for mail-in absentee ballots.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, and just one of several “Emancipation Days” observed by Black diasporic communities in the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, and the U.S.

Parties in LWV New Jersey v. Way drafted reached an agreement establishing a notice and cure process for vote-by-mail ballots in New Jersey.
