Fighting Voter Suppression

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Republican state lawmakers and upheld laws limiting the power of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers.

On May 6, the House Administration Subcommittee on Elections visited Fort Lauderdale, Florida to hold a field hearing on voting rights and elections. I represented LWVFL as a testifying witness.

The arc of justice bent briefly toward Florida in November, when citizens here restored the right to vote for most people with felony convictions who have completed their sentences. However, the state legislature devised a way to once again deprive the vote of most of the people we had hoped to re-enfranchise.

The League joined over 100 organizations on letters to all announced presidential candidates urging them to implement a democracy reform plan. 

LWV of Tennessee filed a federal lawsuit today challenging a new Tennessee law that imposes substantial penalties on groups that foster political participation via voter registration efforts.

The League sent a memo to the U.S. Senate calling for a hearing on the For the People Act. 

Dakota citizens and members of Congress gathered at Fort Yates, on the Standing Rock Sioux Nation, for a field hearing of the Committee on House Administration, Subcommittee on Elections.

This bill will make elections fairer and put power back in the hands of the American people.

The League urged Representatives to support HR4, the Voting Rights Advancement Act.
