League of Women Voters Supports Senate Action on Reproductive Rights

League calls on the Senate to remove the filibuster to protect reproductive freedom

Press Release / Last Updated:

WASHINGTON – Today the League of Women Voters of the United States President Dr. Deborah Turner and CEO Virginia Kase Solomón issued the following statement in support of the Senate legislation protecting reproductive rights:

"Today, the League of Women Voters supports the Senate in standing up for our reproductive rights, including access to abortion. We fully support the Women's Health and Protection Act and urge the Senate to pass this bill by any means necessary, including by amending or eliminating the filibuster.

"The League believes in the power of women to create a more perfect democracy, and we believe protection for reproductive health decisions is a democracy issue. This is a frightening time for women and all people who may become pregnant as we wait on the Supreme Court to decide the fate of reproductive freedom in this country. A Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe and Casey would open the door to erode other fundamental civil liberties. Therefore, we stand with our allies to protect the power to control our own bodies, lives, and futures.

"It is the responsibility of Congress to make laws that protect the American people, and today we support the Senate in standing up for our rights and for democracy. In keeping with our stand on voting rights, we support amending or eliminating the filibuster to protect the rights of women and other impacted communities, because reproductive rights are human rights."
