LWV Supports Procedural Maneuver to Bring Voting Rights Bills to Senate Floor

Press Release / Last Updated:

WASHINGTON — Today, League of Women Voters CEO Virginia Kase Solomón issued the following statement in reaction to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s strategy for bringing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to the Senate floor, bypassing the filibuster rule.

“For months, the League of Women Voters and our civil rights partners have been calling on our leaders to get federal voting protections passed by any means necessary. The strategy announced by the Senate Majority Leader will force Senate debate on the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act for the first time. This is the kind of powerful and shrewd commitment to action that we’ve been calling for to get these essential bills over the finish line. We call on the Senate to do everything in its power to pass these voting rights bills.”
