The Richmond City Council recently made the short-sighted decision to reject a proposal to adopt Ranked Choice Voting for the upcoming council elections in 2024. The co-signers of this letter know that adopting a new voting system would not be an easy task, but we are still disappointed in the council’s decision for two overarching reasons.

The League of Women Voters of the United States joined a public statement urging Congress not to enact laws that expand federal resources for policing, prosecution, and other criminal-legal practices without accountability measures and measurable improvements in safety outcomes. 

WASHINGTON — The League of Women Voters of the United States is thrilled to announce the launch of its new Legal Center on the organization’s website, LWV.org. The center showcases the organization’s legal work in federal courts from across the country.  

The League signed onto a letter calling on the US Senate to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which would ensure that all federal benefits are available to married couples no matter where they live and that states give full faith and credit to valid marriages.
