WASHINGTON — The League of Women Voters and the Washington Mystics have teamed up this year to promote civic engagement both on the court and at the polls. For this year’s Commissioner’s Cup tournament, the Washington Mystics have chosen the League of Women Voters as its charity partner and will donate the team tournament proceeds to the 104-year-old voting rights organization in honor of this season’s theme of civic engagement. 

Today the Supreme Court of the United States overturned a lower court’s ruling that South Carolina’s congressional map was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. This decision allows the state of South Carolina to continue using its congressional map that divides and reduces Black political voting power in the state, while increasing the burden on voters who challenge unconstitutional racial gerrymanders in federal court.

A federal judge permanently blocked a severely restrictive provision of Florida’s anti-voter law, SB7050, that targeted nonpartisan civic engagement groups with substantial fines if non-citizens — including legal permanent residents — helped with nonpartisan voter registration drives.

WASHINGTON — The American Library Association (ALA) and League of Women Voters today announced a new partnership to educate and empower voters in 2024. The collaboration is part of ALA’s recently launched Reader. Voter. Ready. campaign aimed to equip libraries to engage with voters. 

A coalition of civil rights, voting rights, and disability rights organizations filed a motion for a preliminary injunction asking the court to pause the state of Alabama from criminalizing the assistance of voters with their absentee ballot applications, which now may result in felony penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
