Restore the VRA

The League joined the Leadership Conference for Civil and Human Rights and its member organizations calling for voting rights to be addressed at the upcoming Democrat and Republican debate/forum. The letter is signed by 36 organizations and has been sent to the network heads at MSNBC and CNBC as well as the moderators of the events.

"League teams are finding new voters at bike races, gyms and new citizen ceremonies on this National Voter Registration Day,” said President MacNamara.

I believe that everyone deserves equal access to vote. The work that the League has done for the last 95 years and continues to do to bring access to citizens in underserved communities is important for the strength of our democracy.

Fifty years ago today, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act (VRA) into law, calling the day ''a triumph for freedom." The VRA was an historic achievement that changed America.

On the second anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision, advocates met in Roanoke, VA to call upon Virginia Congressman Bob Goodlatte to act to restore the Voting Rights Act.

50 years ago, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act. Two years ago, the Supreme Court overturned a key part, leading to an attack on voting rights. Tell Congress to restore the VRA!

“We are very pleased that new legislation has been introduced but there is so much more work to be done with the 2016 elections are quickly approaching,” said President MacNamara.

When Congress left Washington this month, they also left behind a lot of work -- including helping prevent voter discrimination by moving the Voting Rights Amendment Act (VRAA) forward.

Earlier this month, a federal judge denied a preliminary injunction barring North Carolina’s new restrictive elections law.
